LGA donates N12m toward youth empowerment scheme

Okehi (Rivers)   – Mr Ability Nweke, Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Etche Local Government Area (LGA) on Friday presented N12m toward supporting the youths affected by clashes involving cults groups in the area.

Nweke made the donation during the maiden council’s `Youth Empowerment programme’ in Okehi, Etche LGAs of Rivers.

He said the donation was aimed a\t supporting the youths that suffered the adverse effects of restiveness over the past few months.

Nweke said that the 120 youths affected in the area would each receive N10, 000 for the programme, expected to run monthly throughout his tenure at the head of the council.

“A few months ago, it was totally impossible for our people to assemble in this manner; communities like Obibi, Okehi, Akwu, Igbodo were completely shut down.

“During the period of crises, a number of lives and property worth millions of naira were also destroyed; indeed, the economy of our land was adversely affected’’.

He, then, urge them to understand that his executive would be committed toward embarking on projects and programmes that would positively touch lives of the people in the council area.

Mr Chinemerem Okere, a youth leader in Etche, on behalf of the beneficiaries, commended the chairman and his team, promising to collaborate with the security agencies toward ensuring that peace returned to the area.

He urged the beneficiaries to invest the money in rehabilitating their farms destroyed during the crises. (NAN)
