NGO blames indiscriminate dumping of refuse on poor planning

Kaduna – An NGO, Safety Awareness and Environmental Support Initiative (SAESI), has blamed the challenge of refuse evacuation on poor town planning and disregard for building regulations.

The NGO’s Controller General, Yahaya Mohammed, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kaduna.

Mohammed said residents indiscriminately dispose refuse on the streets due to lack of refuse disposal points occasioned by poor town planning and disregard for building regulations.

“Residents built houses without making provisions for refuse disposal point and the regulatory bodies are not doing anything about it.

“Houses were equally built on streets with no space for drains making it even more difficult for refuse evacuators to effectively carry out their task,“ he said.

He urged regulatory bodies to ensure proper planning of areas earmarked for development through provision of refuse dumping sites.

“Refuse disposal points should be located at least between two streets in every area to ensure effective and regular evacuation,“ he said.

He also advised residents against building houses on water ways which predispose communities to flooding.

Mohammed expressed support for the state government’s move to demolish illegal structures.

He called on residents to support the government by ensuring that their drains were cleared to prevent outbreak of diseases. (NAN)
