Abia Solidarity Group for Democracy (ASGD), a non-governmental organisation is advocating for the election of a female governor in Abia State to correct the past its perceived past and present failures of the male governors in the state.
The group in a statement signed by its national coordinator, Engr. Peter Elema, commended the courage of Senator Nkechi Nwaogu who has disclosed her ambition to contest for the governorship position in 2015 under the People Democratic Party (PDP).
While calling for more women participation in active politics, ASGD urged the citizens of the state to support women seeking elective positions especially Senator Nwaogu if they wish to see positive change in terms of development in the state.
“We advocate for a woman governor as a positive alternative to the persistent leadership failure by our men folk who seem to be busier fending for their families and cronies at the expense of the people of Abia state. Considering the rate of infrastructural decay in our state since the last and present administration, we are convinced that the jinx can only be broken by the election of a woman governor for the state,” Engr. Elema stated.
The group urged the incumbent governor, Theodor Orji to concentrate on delivering dividends of democracy especially as the end of his tenure draws near instead of engaging in schemes to install his successor. According to ASGD, the zoning arrangement which the governor is pushing will not give opportunity to candidates like Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu who are capable to bringing the desired change in the state.
“A level playing ground should be ensured for this amazon who has demonstrated quality representation of the Abia Central Senatorial District at the 7th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as she competes with her male counterparts. Abia indigenes vehemently disagree with this purported zoning arrangement,” the national coordinator stressed.[eap_ad_2]
According to him, the female senator has demonstrated that a woman can attain the pinnacle of success in any chosen career through hard work and diligence, as she has always reached the top in all spheres of human endeavours that she ventures into.
Speaking further about the personality of the senator, Engr Elema said, “As a two-time senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, distinguished Senator Nkechi Nwaogu has constantly fought for economic and social justice through her positions. In her first tenure in the upper legislative chamber, she was the Chairman Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions. As a seasoned financial manager with sound fiscal discipline, she was able to restore sanity and strict adherence to rules and order in the nation’s financial sector.
“In her current position as the chairman, Senate Committee on Gas Resources, she has actively pushed for greater transparency, accountability and rapid development in the nation’s gas industry. This is due to her sincere passion to help boost Nigeria’s economy by ensuring maximum uitilization of the nation’s gas resources. To her, Nigeria has all it takes to become one of the top 20 economies by 2020 and she is assiduously working hard through her committee to ensure that such vision becomes a reality.”
According to the group, Senator Nwaogu who has been a member of the ECOWAS Parliament from 2005 to date and also the Executive Director for West African Region, African Parliamentarian’s Network Against Corruption (APNAC), has always left indelible marks wherever she works which propels her to greater responsibility.
“Her story is that of an achiever who climbs one step at a time leaving indelible marks which propels her to greater responsibilities. Certainly, she will replicate same feet as a governor if she is given the opportunity to serve our state in that capacity. Abia has been denied of purposeful leadership all along. This is the time for all of us to join hands and deliver the state from the claws of darkness,” the group restated.[eap_ad_3]
