Lagos – The Proprietress, Bethseda Home for the Blind, Mrs Chioma Ohakwe, has appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to assist in recruiting more teachers that would cater for the needs of blind students.
Ohakwe said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.
According to her, the appeal is against the backdrop of the preparation for blind students ahead of the 2016 all Computer-Based Test of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
She said that the home was preparing its students for next year’s UTME organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Ohakwe said that the registration was on-going but the home was faced with the challenge of adequate teachers that would specialise in various subjects.
“I want to seize this opportunity to appeal with well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to come to our aid in the area of teacher recruitment.
“We equally want to appeal to volunteer teachers who can avail themselves and complement the efforts of the existing ones.
“You know we have been enrolling and preparing the blind students for the up-coming UTME.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“We do not have the resources to recruit and pay as many of these teachers as we may want, that is why we are limiting the number of teachers that we need now to just four.
“We will be happy if kind-hearted Nigerians will come to our aid because the existing teachers are saddled with the responsibility of teaching too many subjects.
“This is not the best, if we intend to post excellent results,’’ she said.
Ohakwe pleaded with authorities of the University of Lagos to increase efforts in processing the admission of candidates from the home who were given placements in the institution.
NAN reports that 21 blind candidates from the home sat for the 2015 UTME and scored 200 and above. (NAN)
