Abuja -Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), has registered 157 companies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to assist it promote safe use of pesticide.
Mr Simeon Ajueyichi, AEPB’s Deputy Director, Environmental Health and Safety, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said that the 157 companies were given the responsibility of promoting awareness on safe use of pesticide in the territory.
He said that pesticide could be useful and productive if used according to the stipulated guidelines.
He added that it could also harm the environment and cause damage to human beings if not properly used.
Ajueyichi expressed concern that several individuals were still using banned chemicals in spite of the hazards they pose and urged the companies to assist the AEPB curtail the trend.
The deputy director recalled that the board recently inaugurated a committee to promote safe use of pesticide and check misapplication of pest control pesticide in residential areas.

“In Nigeria cancer is on the increase, we have found out that wrong use of pesticide is contributing to the cause of cancer,’’ he said. (NAN)
