Commission commends Arase’s respect for human rights

Abuja – Prof. Bem Angwe, Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission(NHRC), has commended the Inspector General of Police (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase, for instructing officers and men of the Nigeria Police to respect human rights.
This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Lambart Oparah, Senior Special Assistant to the Executive Secretary and made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
The statement quoted Angwe as describing Arase as a human rights friendly officer while calling on other heads of agencies to adjust their operational procedures.
He said the I-Gs statement was a welcome development in the light of reported cases of acts of incivility, physical assault, intimidation and extrajudicial killings perpetrated by the police.
The statement said the NHRC was ready to partner with the police and other stakeholders in mainstreaming human rights.

It also hailed the I-G for sustaining the ban on road blocks, describing it as source of extortion and abuse of human rights.
“Frivolous searches, intimidation, arrests and extra-judicial killings are hallmarks of these road blocks”, he said.
The statement urged the I-G to consider reactivating the Human Rights Desks in all Police formations in the country.
It said that would enhance the ability of the police to respect and protect the human and fundamental rights of the people. (NAN)
