Lagos – An Ogba Chief Magistrates Court has sentenced each of the 82 violators of November environmental sanitation in Lagos State held on Nov.29 to six hours of community service.
Each of them was, however, given an option of N3, 000 fine.
This is contained in a statement released by the Lagos State Ministry of Information and made available to newsmen in Lagos.
The statement quoted Mr Deji Badejo, the Administrator, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), as confirming the development.
The statement said the violators were arraigned on a charge of violating the State Environmental Sanitation Laws.
It said that it was an offence punishable under Section 18 (1) of the Environmental Sanitation Laws, Cap 5, Vol. 2 Laws of Lagos State.
The statement said that the violators pleaded guilty to the charge.
It said that the prosecution was to serve as a deterrent to those who were in the habit of flouting the environmental sanitation law.
“The brigade usually releases offenders who violate the state’s sanitation laws after educating them on the implications of their action.

“But, it has now resorted to prosecuting offenders, when we observed a growing number of offenders in the past two months,’’ it said.
The statement said that some of the offenders were arrested at Ojota, former Lagos Toll Gate, Oshodi, Agege, Ojodu Berger, and Mile 12 among others between 7a.m. and 10 a.m.
The administrator urged residents of the state to always obey the environmental sanitation law by participating in the monthly exercise. (NAN)
