Owerri – The Imo Secondary Education Management Board has inaugurated sanitation clubs in public secondary schools to complement the government’s efforts to ensure a healthy society.
Speaking at the inauguration of the clubs in Owerri on Thursday, the Executive Secretary of the board, Mrs Sneh Onyearugbulam, that said one of the cardinal objectives of education in Nigeria was to inculcate the right values in children.
“This board adopted the process of building, developing and reforming the society through sanitation in the education sector.
“Schools could provide a platform for sanitation and hygiene promotional programmes.
“The construction of appropriate child friendly facilitates, proper use of hand washing soaps and good toilets will help to reduce the incidences of diarrhoea and other diseases in the state.
The Permanent Secretary of Economic Affairs at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Eddy Igharo, said the sanitation clubs would create environmental consciousness in the students.
Igharo said it would also help to promote clean and healthy environment in the schools and communities at large.
He urged members of the club to take the initiative seriously while the teachers, students and patrons of the clubs should ensure their sustainability to achieve the desired goals.
The President of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPS) in Imo, Nze Godwin Amagulu, emphasised the need for the schools to always have sanitation materials and good toilets.

Some of the students expressed their gratitude for being members of the club and promised to abide by the rules. (NAN)
