Grassroots sports competitions will promote unity –Rep

Nasarawa Eggon (Nasarawa State) – Alhaji Ibrahim Muluku, a member representing Nasarawa Eggon East at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, says organising sport competitions at the grassroots will promote a peaceful co-existence across the country.
Speaking at a table tennis competition he organised for youths in his constituency, he observed that sports activities could as well promote unity among the diverse ethnic, religious and political groups.

Muluku, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the 2015 maiden edition of the competition, said that the competition was also aimed at reducing youth restiveness in the area and the state to enhance development.

“I have done much in the area of infrastructure development, youths and women empowerment and sports development, especially football among others in my constituency.

“I have been organising football competition for the youth but now I have decided to change to table tennis competition which is going to be an annual event.

“This is in order to promote the game as well as promote unity and peace in my constituency and the state the large,’’he said.

According to him, in table tennis, just like any other game, there is no permanent enemy, this competition has brought together the youth and people of my constituency.

“This competition has provided an avenue for my people to interact, exchange positive ideas and pleasantries as well as make the youth to discover their hidden talents and potential for development.

“Sports can be a valuable tool for national integration, apart from physical well-being, sports can play an important role for a safer, more prosperous and more peaceful society,’’ he said.

Muluku called on the youth and Nigerians to be law abiding, respect constituted authority and shun all negative tendencies in order to achieve permanent peace in the country.

He also called on the law maker not to relent in his efforts in developing his constituency and called on other politicians to emulate him for the overall development of the country.

Responding, Mr Anyudo Adda, one of the participants, who spoke on behalf of others, thanked the law maker for organising the competition and called for its sustenance.

A flat screen television, home theatre and a standing fan were awarded as gifts to Annas Ahmed, Usman Laka and Anyudo Adda, who came first, second and third respectively in the competition.(NAN)
