YENAGOA – The Bayelsa government on Tuesday said it had embarked on the assessment of its health facilities with a view to overhauling the healthcare delivery system in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Ayibatonye Owei, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa that the assessment was aimed at ensuring that hospital facilities were utilised.
“We are going round the state in order to audit the health facilities.
“Our aim is to ensure that those hospital facilities or health centres that are not being utilised are put to good use and places that require hospitals we ensure that they have hospitals.
“We must endeavour to get healthcare to every nook and cranny of Baylesa State.
“We have five referral hospitals which will be functional in the next few months and then we also have older hospitals in other local government areas that are being renovated.
“That means every local government will have a standard hospital as a referral centre.’’
Owei said the facilities visited by the ministry were Referral hospital, Health centre in Sagbama and Kolukumo/Opokuma local government area, Cottage hospital, Oluasiri in Nembe, among others.
He said the ministry also visited College of Health Science in Ogbia Local Government Area and the School of Nursing, Tombia in Yenagoa Local Government Area.
The commissioner urged health officers to support the health development campaign, describing health sector as “key area” in any restoration plan. (NAN)
