LAGOS – The Lagos State Government on Wednesday restated its commitment to ensure regular maintenance of public infrastructure.
Ms Adenike Adekanbi, General Manager, Office of Facility Management and Maintenance, gave the assurance at the first stakeholders’ forum of the agency in Lagos.
She said that the establishment of the agency was to give verve to proper maintenance of all the state’s facilities.
According to her, the government is already carrying out regular maintenance of its health and educational facilities.
The manager said that the forum was organised to provide a platform for engagement with all contractors doing business with the State Government.
In his presentation, the Chairman, Lagos Public Works Corporation, Mr Gbenga Akintola, said there was an improvement in the capacity of the corporation to maintain Lagos roads.
Akintola said there was a projection that over 1400 roads would be maintained in 2014.
According to him, the establishment of the asphalt plants at Imota and Badagry is to enable the corporation to respond promptly to its maintenance responsibilities.
He urged residents to embrace a culture of public ownership of facilities and distance themselves from any act that would shorten the life span of public infrastructure.
The General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board, Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, in her remark, implored the people to conserve energy and power by switching off unused appliances.
“I encourage us all to cultivate the habit of using energy saving bulbs.
“It is important for everybody to regularly do a general audit of energy they consume as this will help save resources.
“Public and private organisations are advised to appoint energy officers whose responsibility will be to ensure the conservation of unused energy,” Ogunbiyi said.
A representative of Deux Project Limited, Mr Kayode Jegede, said that delivery of infrastructure must not end with inauguration alone.
Jegede said that it must include appropriation of necessary funds and deployment of staff for its maintenance and operation. (NAN)
