Aviation union promises to support airport concession

Ilorin – The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has said it will support the planned concession of airport facilities on the Private, Public Partnership (PPP) arrangement if workers interests are adequately protected.

The NUATE Chairman in Ilorin International Airport, Mr Adebayo Tutuola, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Tuesday.

Tutuola said the union was not opposed to the concession, but only interested in the welfare of its members and workers generally.

He said that though the concession arrangement would reduce financial burden of government, but added that government must ensure that the security of the country was not compromised.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“There should be agreement on modalities of the concession between the concerned government agency and the workers for the arrangement to work out,’’ he said.

He said concession should not only free funds for government to deploy to provide social needs for the citizenry, but should also enhance airport upgrade, modernisation and profitability.

According to him, there must be legal and administrative frameworks that will serve as guide to the concession, so that it will benefit both government and the private sector.

He said that all concessions that had been done in the aviation industry in the past were against the interest of government because they did not follow defined modalities. (NAN)
