Abuja – Over the alleged theft of an ice-cream machine, a businessman, Maaruf Idris, 33, on Thursday appeared before a Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja.
Idris, who resides at Kuchigoro Village, Airport Road, Abuja, is standing trail on a charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, Mrs Ndidi Ukaoha, told the court that sometime in 2015, one Mr Yahaya Yakubu, of the above named-address informed the police that his ice-cream machine had been stolen by some unknown persons.
Ukaoha said that immediately after the report, the police launched investigations into the case but the search was fruitless.
She said that on Jan. 6, 2016, Yakubu alerted the police that he had found the stolen ice-cream machine with Idris.
The prosecutor said that when Idris was invited to the police station and interrogated, he could not give satisfactory explanations as to how he came about the machine.
Ukaoha said that that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code Law.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates five years’ imprisonment for stealing but with an option of fine or both.

However, Idris denied committing the offence.
The Judge, Mr Garba Ogbede, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with a surety in like sum.
Ogbede also ordered that the sureties must have fixed addresses within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case till Feb. 2 for hearing. (NAN)
