Specialisation strengthens public confidence in legal practice – lawyer

Abuja  – An Abuja-based lawyer, Mr Adewale Aderele, has said that specialisation in legal profession will strengthen public confidence in the legal practice.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, Aderele said specialisation would evolve by itself and should not be forced.

“ Specialisation in legal practice is a situation whereby a chamber or a legal practitioner has the sufficient expertise in a specific subject area in which he can be termed an authority or expert.

“ And in such case, he or she could limit his practice to that area of law; and in most cases he or she could have been published in that area.

“ And must have acquired such expertise in it that he can be classified a specialist or a consultant in that area; it will strengthen the confidence of the public in the legal practice.

“ It will also be good for the public because they will get accurate advice.

“The legal practice will gain from that in the case where you have complicated cases, the specialist can be invited as the friend of the court to guide the court in what we call amicus curia,“ he said.

Aderele also said that the public would be able to make choices and take decisions on whether to go ahead with a matter or not.

He said nobody tried to specialise without first, having broad view or knowledge in different areas of law and that there were no hard and fast rule on when to start specialising.

“Nobody attempts to specialise in the first five years because you need a broad base in other aspects of law.

“When you already have broad knowledge in other aspects you can then decide on your own volition on the areas you want to focus on,” the lawyer said.(NAN)
