Lagos – The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, has urged community leaders to assume responsibilities for public schools in their communities to promote better community participation in education.
Adebule made the appeal at a two-day stakeholders’ Conference on education which commenced on Thursday.
The conference is organised by the Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN) and the Developing Effective Private Education in Nigeria (DEEPEN).

ESSPIN and DEEPEN are subsidiaries of the Department of International Development (DFID).
She said that the state government had made lots of effort to improve the infrastructure and learning environment in schools to give education a positive outlook.
“Revamping the education sector to the standard obtainable in developed countries requires the collaboration of government, civil and private organisations as well as community members.
“As a government, we are currently focused on implementing inclusive education that will facilitate the recognition of the interest of out-of-school children.
“We are committed to enhancing the quality of education delivery in the state in terms of quality teaching and improved students’ performance.
“I encourage parents and community members to participate effectively as important stakeholders in the management of schools,’’ she said.
Adebule commended the DFID for its contributions toward improving the quality of education.
Speaking, Mrs Margaret Fagboyo, Acting Regional Coordinator, DFID, noted that the conference was aimed at reviewing the challenges, progress and state of the education sector.
Fagboyo said it was also geared toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on education to support planning, implementation of policies and quality assurance to improve learning outcomes in schools. (NAN)
