Sokoto – The Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, on Tuesday admitted 61 graduating Veterinary Surgeons into the profession.
The chairman of the day, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar, urged the three tiers of government to give the deserved priority to the veterinary and livestock sub-sectors of the economy.
Umar, the Wazirin Gwandu, also urged the graduates to, ” as a matter of professional obligation and ethics, continue to conduct themselves properly as they interact with their clients and the larger community.
“As you leave the four walls of the citadel of learning into a larger populace, let me remind you about the current challenges of the ravaging emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases which your training had adequately covered.
“You must demonstrate the leadership training you acquired and the skills in bringing about prevention and control of these menaces.
“Practical examples are needed from you in combating the current epidemic of Lassa fever currently going on across the country,” he said.
Umar also advised them to play their traditional roles of educating the public on the dangers inherent in associating with rats and rodents.
” These diseases emanate from animals, domestic and wild.” he said.
The Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Abdullahi Magaji, said that the set was the largest number of graduates to be produced in its history.
Magaji said that the faculty had so far graduated 604 veterinarians that had become accomplished academics, researchers, field officers, politicians, business men and women, among other fields of endeavour.
