Port Harcourt – The Rivers Government said on Friday that it would collaborate with security agencies to combat sea piracy on the waterways.
The state Commissioner for Transport, Mr Akie Fubara, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that security was part of the cardinal objectives of the present administration.
Fubara said that he had arranged to meet with the security chiefs in the state, to outline strategies on how to curb the menace on the seas.
He noted that it was part of government’s plan to provide vehicles for marine transportation.
The commissioner said that the gesture of government in that direction was intended to address the challenges encountered by passengers using the water route.
On road transportation, Fubara said he had issued a directive to commercial vehicle operators to paint all their vehicles in the state colour.
He said the move was designed to differentiate their vehicles from those of other states.
the commissioner said he had held a meeting with members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and directed them to also register all their vehicles. (NAN)
