Jos – Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), a non-governmental orgnaisation in the Catholic Diocese of Pankshin, has empowered 950 women in micro-scale enterprise.
The Coordinator of the commission, Rev. Fr. Basil Kassam, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Tuesday.
Kassam said that 529 women of the 950 women trained in small scale businesses, loan management and business plan and savings have accessed the loan.
“We have so far trained 950 women out of which 529 have already accessed the funds and plans are on ground to release funds for the remaining women.
“One of the cardinal objectives of setting up the JDPC is to extend support to the poorest of the poor in the society.
“So, we are saddled with the responsibility of empowering poor women who are into petty trading by boosting their capital base and make efficient contribution aimed at reducing poverty in families and communities.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“This will help the beneficiaries strive towards self-reliance by generating income and savings.
“It will also build their capacity in micro-credit scheme, savings, loan management, entrepreneurship, and record keeping,’’ he said.
The coordinator explained that the scheme was being run in about seven parishes of the diocese while massive sensitisation was ongoing to incorporate other parishes.
He expressed satisfaction that beneficiaries of the loan were utilising it judiciously. (NAN)
