Magistrate remands suspected car snatchers in prison custody

Umuahia  –   An Umuahia Magistrates’ Court on Thursday remanded two suspected car snatchers in prison custody for allegedly robbing Mr Ugochukwu Ibenge of his car at gunpoint.
Ibenge was reportedly dispossessed of his Toyota Rav4 SUV car, handsets, bags and other personal effects at Agbama Housing Estate, Umuahia, on July 22, 2015.
The defendants, Blessing Oti and George Okereke, attacked their victim while armed with guns and other dangerous weapons.
The offence contravened Section 1 (2) (a) of the Robbery and firearms Act.

The Presiding Magistrate, Chinyere Ibe, said that her court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case.
She, therefore, directed that the case file should be moved to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution for vetting and legal opinion.
Ibe remanded the defendant in Federal Prisons, Afara, Umuahia, but reminded them of their rights to apply for bail through the High Court, Umuahia.
He adjourned the case till March 29 for report of compliance.(NAN)
