Awka – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Command, says no fewer than 928 motorists were convicted for various traffic offences between Jan. 1 and March 31 in the state.
The state Sector Commander, Mr Sunday Ajayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Friday that a total of 970 motorists were arraigned before mobile courts while 42 were discharged.
Ajayi listed some of the offences to include speed violation, overloading, driving against traffic, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving vehicles with expired tyres.
A breakdown of the figures shows that 185 were arrested in January while 418 and 367 were arrested in the months of February and March respectively.
The sector commander said that due to intensive awareness campaigns and regular patrols on the highways, motorists in the state had become more compliant to traffic and safety rules.
He said that the establishment of mobile courts had helped in the expedient discharge of traffic matters and called for greater cooperation in the command.
Ajayi urged motorists to endeavour to comply with traffic rules for general safety, noting that the essence was not to punish but to reduce avoidable road accidents. (NAN)
