Lagos – A 32-year-old trader, Oluwaseun Orekoya, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly using a stick to blind her neighbour’s right eye.
Orekoya, a resident of No.13, Oladeyi Oponfa, Street, Papa Ashafa, Agege, is being tried for breach of peace and assault.
The Prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences at her residence on April 1.
Nwosu said that the defendant unlawfully assaulted her neighbour, Ramota Shiteolu, by beating and damaging her eye.
Nwosu said that after the complainant washed her clothes and spread them on a rope that the defendant’s son went touching those clothes.
“The defendant’s five-year-old son was playing with the complainant’s clothes spread outside and the complainant asked him to leave and he ran inside his mother’s room.
“The defendant rushed out to confront the complainant for chasing her son inside,’’ the prosecutor said.
Nwosu further told the court that both parties started exchanging words and in the process the defendant descended on the complainant and beat her.
“The defendant tore the complainant’s cloth, stripped her naked, bite her in her armpit and beat hell out of her.
“Orekoya was not satisfied; she picked a big stick and hit it on the complainant’s eye, which damaged the eye.
“She stopped, only when she saw blood gushing out of her eye,’’ the prosecutor said.
The offences, Nwosu said, contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which on conviction attracts three-year jail term.
The defendant pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, adjourned the case till May 9 for mention. (NAN)
