Boxing team yet to resume camping ahead of Rio Games — coach

Abuja –  Coach Tony Konyegwachie, the National Boxing team on Monday said his team had yet to resume camping ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Games are scheduled to run from Aug. 7 to Aug. 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Konyegwachie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that in spite of delays in the resumption of the camping, he was optimistic that the team would perform well at the Games.

“We have yet to resume camping and all these boils down to a lack of finance. Well, that has always been the situation; we resume camping late and still do well.

“We just hope the issue will not affect us in anyway because we are sure of winning medals,’’ the coach said.

Konyegwachie also said the team would love to go on training tours, which will depend on approval by the federation.

“The gymnasium that we have here does not really give us the kind of training experience we want, so we will love to go on training tour before the Olympics,’’ he said.

Only two boxers, Efe Ajagba and Caroline Linus qualified to participate in the Olympics. (NAN)
