Warri (Delta) – The Centre for the Vulnerable and Underprivileged (Centrep) an NGO, has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Civil Society Organisations to suspend their protest over the increase in the price of fuel.
The Executive Director of Centrep, Mr Oghenejabor Ikimi, made the call on Friday in a statement he made available to newsmen in Warri.
Ikimi, however, commended the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) for pulling out of the ongoing nationwide strike.
He urged other unions to withdraw from the industrial action in the interest of the nation.
“We call on Ayuba Wabba-led NLC and her Civil Society collaborators to discontinue their nationwide protest and strike action.
“Such an action is tantamount to protecting fuel subsidy billionaires and thieves to the detriment of the Nigerian masses and the nation’s economic growth.
“We believe that full deregulation of the downstream sector or a price hike of petroleum products nationwide will go a long way to eliminate the fraud associated with the subsidy regime,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the NLC and its affiliates embarked on a nationwide protest on May 13, demanding the immediate reversal of the N145 fuel pump price to N86.50.
The strike is not effective in Warri as some organisations that joined the industrial action at the beginning have pulled out. (NAN)
