Abuja – Nigerian Press Council (NPC), says it is ready to partner with relevant organisations to enhance the capacity of journalists in the country.
Mr Nnamdi Njemanze, Executive Secretary of NPC, announced this during interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja on Thursday.
He said it was imperative for the council to seek the support of international agencies to improve the capacity of the media with a view to ensuring best international practice.
“The Nigerian Press Council will partner with some multilateral bodies and civil society organisations to train journalists to enhance their capacity.
“We are going to start discussing with those multilateral bodies to consummate the training programme this year or in 2017‘’, Njemanze said.
He also said the council intended to work with journalists’ platforms to support capacity building programmes aimed to entrenching high professional standard.
Njemanze stressed that the need for capacity building for journalists could not be over emphasised, adding that properly trained journalists were the protectors of truth in every society.
He said since the return to democratic rule in 1999 and the passage of Freedom of Information Act, 2011 (FOI), the Nigerian media landscape had expanded.
The executive secretary added that the FOI makes it mandatory for government officials and public institutions to avail their records to journalists and citizens, who were interested in such information. (NAN)
