Lagos – Sunny Obot, Secretary of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), on Saturday applauded Emmanuel Oghenejobo, Coordinator of the Agoma Open Martial Arts Festival, for his contributions to the development of Taekwondo in the country.
Obot told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that many national taekwondo champions who have represented and won medals for the nation at international Games and events passed through the championships.
“The championships have really contributed to the success of our champions and promoted Taekwondo since it was introduced in 2001, and the remarkable thing about this competition is its consistency.
“It’s a remarkable effort that calls for commendation and we give it to him, and to cap it all, taekwondo is the only sport featuring in this year’s edition, which is particularly good for our athletes,” he said.
Obot, however, appealed to lovers of the martial arts and corporate organisations to support the continuity of the championships, which according to him, has meaningfully engaged the youths in the martial arts in the country.
“This competition usually has karate, kickboxing, wushu/kungfu, judo and taekwondo as events, but the financial involvement has compelled Oghenejobo, the sponsor, to exclude other sports, so it is now necessary for fans to assist in keeping the competition alive,’’ he added.
NAN reports that the competition which is holding at the National Stadium, Lagos featured fight and poomsae events in taekwondo with athletes from the states and various clubs across the nation.
The NTF scribe added that the competition was holding at an appropriate time, and would serve as part of the build up for taekwondoists who aspire to compete at the 19th National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Calabar between November and December. (NAN)
