Lagos – The Dental Technologists Registration Board of Nigeria on Tuesday solicited the support of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in creating public awareness on the availability of professional dental services in the country.
The Information Officer of the board, Mrs Ruqayyat Abass, made the call during a courtesy visit to the agency’s Lagos Office.
“We are here to seek collaboration with NAN in such a way that our activities can be made known to the general public.
“As a Board, we regulate the affairs of dental technologists and dental therapists; they all work together with the dental surgeons, as a team.
“Without the dental technologist, the dental surgeon cannot function properly,‘’ she said.
Also speaking, a Dental Technologist with the Board, Mrs Joy Oyibo, said that the board shouldered the responsibility of regulating the practice of dental professionals in the country, to prevent quackery.
“There are so many avenues through which the board can do that; the board also conducts educational programmes for the professionals who are already in practice.
“This is in order to enable them to improve on their skills as technology keeps improving; so we keep improving our members to ensure that they are able to keep abreast of technology,“ she said.
In his remarks, the Head of NAN’s Lagos Operations, Mr Joe Bankole, urged the board to ensure that standards were maintained in the education and practice of the dental profession.
According to him, there have been complaints of falling standards of education in schools offering dental technology in the country.
He said that there was also a need for improved surveillance and awareness to sensitise members of the public on the hazards associated with patronising quacks.
“Our major concern is to get adequate information to the public for their own good: their development, sanity, protection, and so on,’’ Bankole said.
He, however, assured the board that NAN would assist it in the dissemination of news about the Board’s activities to the public. (NAN)
