Niger assembly not rubber stamp of executive -Speaker

Minna   – The Niger State House of Assembly, has dismissed insinuations that it is a rubber stamp of the executive arm of government in the state.

The Speaker, Ahmed Marafa, made the statement on Friday in Minna while speaking to newsmen on the activities of the assembly in the past one year.

Marafa said the House was made up of legislators with conscience and high integrity, adding that nobody was interfering with or controlling the affairs of the House.

“In our one year in office, we have proved beyond reasonable doubt that the eighth legislature is an assembly with a difference.

“It is made up of people with conscience and high integrity, the assembly cannot and will never be a rubber stamp to the executive,” he said.

Marafa said that the legislature was actively working with the executive to bring to book past government officials who looted the treasury.

The Speaker said that 31 resolutions were passed by the Assembly, adding that 70 per cent of the resolutions had so far been implemented.

Also briefing newsmen, the Chairman, Committee on Information, Tourism and Culture, Shuiabu Liman-Iya said that 14 private member and executive bills were presented in the past one year.

He said that out of these, five bills were passed by the House and three assented to by Gov. Sani Bello.

He added that the nine other bills were at various stages of first and second readings. (NAN)
