Army explains relocation of Commanding Officers Workshop to Maiduguri

Maiduguri  –  The Nigerian Army on Friday, said it relocated the 2nd Commanding Officers’ Workshop from Enugu to Maiduguri to further enhance its operations against Boko Haram terrorism in the North-East.

Maj.-Gen. Hassan Umaru, the Chief of Training and Logistics, Nigerian Army Headquarters Army, Abuja made the clarification at the closing of the workshop in Maiduguri.

“The workshop was supposed to be held in Enugu, but in the wisdom of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), we decided to relocate it to Maiduguri.

“This is because we want to apply ourselves to the anti-insurgency operation that we are conducting here,” Umaru said.

He expressed optimism the participants would add value to the anti-terrorism war at the end of the workshop.

“The set of officers are from 82 Division in Enugu and its environs.

“The intention is for them to move into the field after listening to lectures and see how soldiers are deployed and how they comply to Nigerian Army Headquarters directives.

“In fact, they are supposed to add value to what has been going on in the theatre of operation,” he said.

Umaru explained that the workshop was moved to Maiduguri following the successes recorded at its first edition held last month in Maiduguri.

“You will recall that last month, the 1st Commanding Officers’ workshop was held in Maiduguri successfully.

“This time around, with the help of the military high command and 7 Division, we decided to hold the 2nd edition here in Maiduguri.”

Also speaking, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, commended COAS for his support for the smooth conduct of the workshop.

“I am privileged to most sincerely express deep appreciation to our indefatigable COAS, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai for choosing the 82 Division,’’ he said.

He also commended the COAS for giving the division the opportunity to play a significant role in organising the workshop.

“This is not withstanding that many other divisions are equally yearning to carry out the same task, if given the opportunity,” he said. (NAN)
