AWKA – The Anambra State government has awarded university scholarship to Amaka Ogoegbunam for winning a gold medal at the just-concluded African Athletic Championships in Morocco.
Gov. Willie Obiano announced the gesture when the athlete, who won the medal in the 400m hurdle, was presented to him in Awka on Tuesday.
He also announced a reward of N1 million cash to the athlete and also N500,000 to her coach, Johnny Igboka.
Obinao said his administration would continue to reward those who bring honour and pride to the state.
He urged the youths to aspire to attain their full potential in their field of endeavour.
While commending the athlete for the success, the governor called on her to work harder to win more laurels in future competitions.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Tony Nnacheta, explained that Ogoegbunam also won three gold medals in the National Sports Festival three years ago.

He said the athlete also won three gold medals and one silver at the last African Junior Championships.
Nnacheta said that since the inception of Obiano’s administration, many athletes who were hitherto neglected had come back to the state.
“They will form the core of the team that will represent the state in the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Calabar in November,’’ he said.
Responding, Ogoegbunam, an A-level student of Eastern Mediterranean University, Cyprus, thanked the governor for the gesture.
She said she would continue to work hard to give the state and country quality representation and urged other athletes to remain focused and self-confident to excel. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
