Uyo – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has said that the use of speed limit device is necessary in Akwa Ibom because of its good network of roads.
The Zonal Commander of Zone 6, Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu, said this during his familiarisation tour of Akwa Ibom on Monday.
“We are doing advocacy to educate people, even in the course of my tour I will talk to our royal fathers, the press and stakeholders on the need for them to ensure that they support FRSC on this campaign.”
Agwu appealed to the motorists in the state to avoid excessive speeding, saying the commission was determined to achieve “zero road crash “ bearing in mind its core mandate.
According to him, the speed limit device will curb the excesses of motorists plying the good road network in the state.
While awaiting the new date for the enforcement of the use of the speed limit device, Agwu said his command had continued to sensitise motorists on the benefits of the device to the sustenance of a good road safety culture.
He also stressed the need for a collaboration between the commission and the state government toward ensuring an accident-free society.
He said the sector needed vehicles such as ambulance and tow trucks for its effective operation in the state, adding that the government’s assistance would reduce the cost of maintenance.
“We need this support in the area of logistics, we need more patrol vehicles, and we need ambulances and tow truck to serve the state better.
“We believe that this support we are enjoying in the state would translate to more mutual and logistics support for the command.
“The support in terms of office accommodation as you know road safety is capital intensive. It costs a lot of money to put patrol vehicles on the road”.
He also urged commission’s officers and men to deal with traffic offenders with civility and firmness while discharging their duties. (NAN)
