The Police in Lagos on Friday arraigned two men, Riches Olasunbo, 37, and Francis Samuel, 36, over the alleged theft of six bottles of Moet Rose champagne worth N267,000 from a supermarket.
Olasunbo and Samuel, whose addresses are unknown, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 23 at 3.45 p.m. at Grand Square Supermarket, Victoria Island, Lagos.
He said that the accused entered the supermarket under the guise of purchasing goods, but hid six bottles of MOET wine under their clothes.
“The security guard suspected them and when a search was conducted, they were found to have concealed the bottles of champagne under their clothes.
The police were subsequently invited to arrest the culprits,” Ighodalo said.
He said that the offences committed contravened Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 285 provides that any person who steals any property is guilty of a felony, and liable, if no other punishment is provided, to three years imprisonment.
However, the accused each pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Ajayi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 each, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Nov. 15, for mention.
