ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – Strong indications have emerged that the Federal Government has renewed the appointment of Dr Yemi Kale as Statistician-General of the Federation for another five-year tenure following the expiration his first tenure on August 16, 2016.
This is as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said that the July 2016 Consumer Price Index which measures inflation rate would be released next week Wednesday, August 31, 2016 as against the earlier schedule of August 18.
Although there is no official announcement yet, Sundiata Post gathered on good authority that Kale’s tenure was renewed for the second and final five year which will expire in 2021.
Kale was appointed in 2011 by the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan administration to head the NBS, especially to introduce best practices in the management and computing of data for use by government and International Development Partners and other users.
His first five years in NBS has been eventful as he spearheaded the rebasing of the Nigeria’s economy that elevated the country as the largest economy in Africa.
He also brought improvements in quality of statistics released by the Bureau and the timeliness of the releases; the petrol and diesel watch as well as the template for tracking the progress of the Sustenance Development Goals (SDGs).
The NBS said in an email message from the Statistician General Dr Yemi Kale, forwarded to Sundiata Post on Tuesday that “the delay was due to some challenges we faced at NBS which delayed progress.”
The bureau also dispelled rumours that the presidency has asked NBS not to release inflation reports following the negative criticisms trailing the rising inflation indices.
Inflation figures have increased from single digit to double digits, hitting 16.45 per cent as at June 2016 and estimated that the July figure is also higher.
The CPI of each month is always released by the NBS latest mid -month of subsequent month but that of July has not been released even as the month of August is running to an end thereby fuelling the speculations.
“There is no truth whatsoever in the rumour that the presidency has asked NBS not to release inflation reports or any other report for that matter. If anything, the presidency especially my ministers and the economic team headed by the Vice President has not only encouraged but pushed to NBS to complete its data assignments on time and accurately as they need it for effective policy decisions.
“The importance they accord accurate and timely data is why as statistician general I have repeatedly been asked to be part of the economic Team deliberations. Accordingly this story is false and should be disregarded.
“The data will be published on the 31st in line with our revised data calendar on our website. Neither the presidency, nor my ministers, any government official has ever interfered in NBS work. The delay was due to some challenges we faced at NBS which delayed progress,” Kale said in an email message forwarded to Sundiata Post on Tuesday.
