Badagry – The Akran of Badagry, De Wholu Aholu Menu-Toyi 1, on Monday urged the Federal Government to establish a commission similar to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Badagry.
The Akran told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry that since the city had been officially designated as an oil-producing community in the state, a commission should be established to look into issues relating to oil.
“I believe that as a matter of urgency, a commission similar to the NDDC should be established with indigenes of the city occupying key positions.
“The officials of the office would look into matters and advise the government on issues relating to oil and what may lead to spillage, environment degradation and destruction of livelihood.
“This would help in reducing any trouble that may relate to oil activities as we do not want crisis that is being witnessed in some places,’’ he said.
The Akran urged the government to appoint the youth in Badagry into managerial and Board positions in the Badagry Deep Sea Port and Free Zone.
“The youth in Badagry should be employed to occupy good positions and not as menial labourers as we have a lot to offer to make this community great.
“The Badagry Local Government should also benefit more in terms of additional funds allocation relating to proceeds from port charges.
“Also, weigh bridges for heavy duty trucks should be introduced on the Badagry Expressway as it is done in all developed countries;
“This will generate additional funds to maintain the expressway,’’ the traditional ruler said.
