LAGOS, (Sundiata Post) – The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ms Hadiza Bala Usman, has asserted that the authority is desirous of prioritizing environmental issues.
She disclosed this on Tuesday when members of the house of Representatives commit on Environment visited the Authority.
Hadiza disclosed that the Authority was set to partner the committee towards achieving success in us functions.
The MD who was represented by the Executive Director Marine and Operations Dr. Sekonte Davies said NPA operates on the International Waters and therefore observes strictly all international laws and regulations.
She also stressed that NPA will do everything possible to remove all Impediments inhibiting vessels calling at the Nigerian Ports, in order to enhance our desire to be the leading Port in the sub region and indeed Africa.
Earlier in his address the Chairman of the House of Representative Committee on Environment Hon. Obinna Chidoka reiterated Nigeria’s commitment at reducing global warming, climate change and the need for Nigeria to end gas flaring by the year 2030.
He also emphasized that due to the importance government attaches to issues concerning Environment, it is therefore sending a high powered delegation to an upcoming international environmental conference in Marrakesh Morocco.
The Chairman noted that it was no longer news that environmental issues have taken global dimension.
The Chairman stressed that the committee is interested in procedural Standalization of the organizations operations as this is expected to enhance safety, security and revenue generation.
Meanwhile, the chairman Board of Directors, NPA, Emmanuel Adesoye has reassured stakeholders and Investors that the Board is aware of the vast potentials and opportunities abound at the Nation’s Seaport.
Adesoye said his team would do its best possible at ensuring that infrastructure such as the dredging of the Calabar Channels is looked into as quickly as possible to curb loss of revenue as well as attract foreign investors to the country.
The board, he opined would ensure that no stone is left unturned towards the actualisation of budgetary provision and implementation of the existing projects.
Adesoye urged all to ensure that there is the optimal synergy towards achieving an efficient delivery of Port operations in view of the vast potentials the sector contribute to the nation’s economy, adding that the Board would ensure that our Seaports rightly take their place in the community of nations such as countries like South Africa and Egypt by making Nigeria a hub in the sub saharan Africa.
He however promised to ensure that Nigeria attains a TEU OF 10 million from its present TEU of one million which would in turn be compared with South Africa with a TEU of 4.8 million and Egypt with a TEU of 8.8 million.
