WARRI – The Chairman of the Delta Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), Mr Moses Ogbe, has called on the state government to provide adequate security for the Oct. 25 council polls in the state.
Ogbe made the call on Tuesday at a one-day sensitisation campaign in Abraka, Ethiope- East Local Government Area of Delta.
The programme was organised by the Delta Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Delta University, Abraka chapter.
Ogbe said that development would enable the electorate to exercise its franchise and wait for the votes to be counted.
The DSIEC boss, who promised credible and transparent election, urged political parties participating in the election to play the game according to the rules.
He also appealed to the state government to empower the commission with adequate logistics to enable it to achieve its mandate.
”It is not going to be business as usual, election results will be announced in each of the wards that make up the 25 local government areas in the state. [eap_ad_1] “Nigeria has wonderful laws and policies but lack the human capacity to drive them. I assure you that every vote must count in this election,” he said.
Mr Mumakai Unagha, who delivered a paper entitled ”Democracy, Good Governance and Electioneering: The Role of Students,” urged Nigerian students to resist being hired by politicians to rig elections.
”Students should avoid being used by politicians to rig elections in any form.
”Students should be involved in civic issues and advocacy, to strengthen good governance in the country,” he urged.
He said DSIEC should also be unbiased in the discharge of its statutory obligations.
The President of the JCC, DELSU chapter, Mr Solomon Ogoron, said the programme was to intimate youths on the danger of thuggery and other electoral malpractice. (NAN)
