Abuja – The police on Thursday arraigned a 35-year-old man, Timi Kolade in a Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court charged with impersonation.
Kolade, who resides at Gwagwa, Abuja, is facing a one-count charge of impersonating a police officer.
The prosecutor, Augustin Urom, told the court that the defendant was caught wearing the uniform of Nigerian Police illegally on November 24, at 5.30 p.m. at Jabi bus stop, Abuja.
Urom said that the defendant wore the police uniform and was extorting money from tricyclists, claiming that they violated traffic rules.
The prosecutor said there were several reports about the defendant at police station
and decided to lay a siege and he was caught in the act.
Urom said the offence contravened Section 132 of the Penal Code.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Fatima Bukar, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum.
Bukar ordered that the surety must be a civil servant and should show evidence of five years tax payment.
She adjourned the case until January 11 for hearing.
