Minna – Alhaji Muktari Mapia, Chairman, Second Hand Car Dealers Association, Northwest, on Thursday called on the Federal Government to review its decision banning importation of vehicles through land borders.
Mapia told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Minna that the ban would create negative effect on revenue generation through the land borders .
He said that not all Nigerians had the financial capacity to import cars through the ports.
NAN recalls that the Nigerian Customs Service, on Dec. 5, issued a directive banning the importation of vehicles through the land borders effective from Jan. 1, 2017.
It gave importers up till the end of December to clear all their pending vehicles from the neighbouring countries.
Mapia explained that prohibiting the importation, new or old, through land borders was not in the best interest of ordinary Nigerians.
He said that considering the nation’s financial challenges, there was the urgent need for the Federal Government to reconsider its decision due to the adverse effect on the well-being of Nigerians.
