Awka – The Ogirisi Foundation, an Igbo Cultural Group, has called on the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to intensify road safety education for drivers to reduce the spate of traffic crashes in the country.
Mr Rommy Ezeonwuka, the founder of the group, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Awka on Sunday.
Ezeonwuka attributed most of the crashes to bad road and failed portions, mostly federal highways, coupled with inadequate warning signs and marks.
He also called on the commission to collaborate with the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to erect signposts at sharp diversions, potholes and construction sites to check crashes.
“We in the Ogirisi Foundation are disturbed by the rate of road crashes in the federal roads in the country, a large percentage of the accidents are as a result of bad roads and in adequate information on roads.
“FRSC should do more than just checking driver’s license and overloading to ensuring that there is adequate information on the roads about failed portions and construction sites,’’ he said.
“The commission should compel the contractors handling road construction to put appropriate signs on the roads, to direct the movement of drivers.
He noted that lack of road signs where road construction took place had been identified as one of the causes of road accidents.
“We do not need more accidents and deaths on our roads, especially now that more people will be travelling for Christmas and New Year celebrations.”
Ezeonwuka commended the FRSC for its effort to sanitise traffic and check the behaviour of motorists.
