Gombe –   The Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Gombe State chapter, has appealed to the Federal Government and the National Assembly to review the prices of speed limit device to make it affordable.

Malam Abdullahi Muhammad, Publicity Secretary of the association made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Tuesday.

NAN reports that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has declared Feb. 1 as the official date for the enforcement of the use of the speed limiting device in the country.

Muhammad said, “N48, 000 is too much for the limiting device, going by the current economic situation in the country. The situation is also affecting our members, hence the need to review the price to at least N10, 000.

“Our members cannot afford to buy the device at the cost of N48, 000.

“We want the Federal Government and the National Assembly to come to our aid by reviewing the price,” he said.

Muhammad also said that the sale of the device should be opened to make it competitive and for the price to reduce.

The RTEAN boss said that the policy was good but that the price of the device needed to be reduced for its members to fully comply without any challenge.

“We welcome the idea of the speed limiting device; we don’t want people to be dying as the result of road accidents.”

Muhammad said that since the country was hit by recession, the business of its members had dropped, adding that many of them hardly generate much income these days.

He stressed the need for government to tackle the deplorable state of roads to make the policy on speed limiting device effective.
