ABUJA – The World Bank Country Director in Nigeria, Ms Marie-Francoise Marie-Nelly, on Tuesday said five states from the North-East would benefit from the bank’s education initiative.
Marie-Nelly made this disclosure at the launch of the bank’s report tagged: “Gender at Work’’ in Abuja.
She listed the states to include Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa and Sokoto.
According to her, the initiative will focus on basic education for girls and women in the society.
“You know we have a programme called conditional cash transfer basically giving the girls stipend for going to school.
“And we want to build on that and then on special focus on girls because you know they have serious disparity between boys and girls in the north,’’ she said.
Marie-Nelly, who said the programme would cost about a 100 million dollars, added that the process would be concluded by the end of 2014, while the project would commence early 2015.
The country director noted that the bank would carry out the project in partnership with other development agencies. (NAN)
