ABUJA – The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology said it had planned to build capacity in nuclear energy for peaceful purpose.
This is contained in the report of the 12th meeting of the National Council on Science and Technology (NCST), which was made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
“Nigeria’s desire to acquire nuclear technology was only for peaceful purposes for the generation of electricity,” it said.
According to the report, nuclear energy also finds ready peaceful applications in agriculture and food security, human health and medicine, water resources management, industry and in basic and applied scientific research.
It said the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purpose/applications was an important element in any nation’s path toward economic, scientific and technological development.
The report stated that there was need to support the development and use of renewable energy technology in the country.
“The development of affordable, inexhaustible and clean renewable energy technology will have huge, longer term economic benefits to the society and environment,” it said. (NAN)
