Kano Govt Warns Against Waste Disposal At Cemeteries

By Aisha Ahmed

Kano –   Kano State Government on Saturday warned residents against the unwholesome practice of disposing waste in cemeteries.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ali Makoda, who issued the warning while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Kano, said henceforth, such act of disrespect to the dead, would be viewed seriously.

Makoda said that cemeteries were the final homes for all humans and must therefore be accorded the respect they deserved.

According to him, in spite of the efforts of some community members in protecting and sanitising the cemeteries, some people still dump their refuse there.

He therefore warned that anyone caught disposing wastes in such places, would be punished severely .

NAN reports that the commissioner and his team were earlier received by members of the Indabawa and Kofar Naisa communities while cleaning the Kofar Naisa cemetery.

The Secretary of the Cemetery Committee, Malam Kabiru Abba, had told the commissioner that they had been battling with some people who had not only been dumping their refuse, but had also turned the cemeteries into their toilets.

The communities then appealed to the government to assist in providing public conveniences around the area to prevent open defecation by some homeless persons.
