ABUJA – As the nationwide strike by the oil workers entered its third day, motorists were seen on Wednesday buying petroleum products at the official pump price within Abuja without stress.
The ongoing strike is devoid of the usual hardship that characterised previous actions, with fuel attendants seizing the opportunity to exploit the public.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers had on Monday ordered their members to embark on an indefinite strike.
The workers started the strike to protest NNPC’s alleged refusal to address unresolved pension issues.
NAN further reports that vehicular queues were noticed in around the city centre in Abuja on Monday shortly after the unions announced commencement of the strike.
The queues, which continued in some filling stations till Tuesday, were said to have been caused by panic buying by motorists upon hearing information about the strike.
However, NAN checks at some filling stations in Abuja showed that queues have fizzled out by Wednesday morning.
Some of the filling stations visited include Total at the Airport Road, Oando at Independent Avenue, Mobil at Olusegun Obasanjo Way and the Total opposite NNPC Tower, Abuja. [eap_ad_1] Others are NNPC mega station on Olusegun Obasanjo Way, ConOil stations in Wuse Zone 4 and Area 10, Garki .
Meanwhile, activities at the NNPC Towers were grounded as the union executives barricaded the entrance to the building on Wednesday, preventing both the staff and visitors from accessing the place.
One of the union members, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that the strike was total.
“As you can see, operations in the tower have been paralysed.
“No one is allowed to enter or perform any activity as both the staff and visitors are being turned back,” he said.
NAN reports that some security operatives were seen manning the area. (NAN)
