NEW YORK – The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on Saturday launched the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response in New York.
A statement issued by Stephane DuJarric the spokesman of the UN scribe, said that Ban had instructed the advance team from the mission for the ‘first-of-its-kind’ operation to head to its base in Accra, Ghana, by Monday. “The framework aims to treat the infected, ensure availability of essential services, preserve stability and prevent the spread of the disease to countries currently unaffected.’’
The statement said Dr David Nabarro the UN Senior Coordinator for Ebola, would provide strategic guidance to the mission.
In a related development, the Secretary-General plans to appoint a special representative to head the mission in order to accelerate support to the countries and people most affected by the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that more than 5,000 people had been infected and more than 2,500 had died since the outbreak of EVD. (NAN)
