The Nasarawa State Government on Thursday said it would train 1400 youths as sanitary inspectors and traffic officers as part of efforts to eradicate poverty.
Alhaji Murtala Adogi, the Senior Special Assistant to State Governor on Youth Development, said this at the headquarters of Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state.
Adogi said that the gesture was to empower the youths, so that they could contribute to the economic development of the state.
Adogi was in Nasarawa town to inspect some skills acquisition centres.
He said that the training of sanitary inspectors was the second phase of the government’s skills acquisition programme.
According to him, the government will give take-off grants to 1,000 youths currently undergoing training at the four skills acquisition centres in the state.
Adogi said that the grants would enable the youths start their businesses after graduation.
He said that the youth currently on three months training were expected to form cooperative groups to enable them enjoy the grants.
He said that the grant would not be in cash but tools in the relevant fields of their training.
The governor’s aide said that the state government would also employ some of them.
Earlier, Mr Ganah Shigah, the Principal of the Centre in the Nasarawa Local Government Area, appealed to the state government to improve power supply to the centre.
Shigah expressed the hope that with adequate power supply, the centre would be able to train many students.
