Washington – Amid media reports that the United States is withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement, President Donald Trump tweeted on Wednesday that he would soon declare his intentions.
“I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days,” the right-wing populist wrote on Twitter.
The website Politico, citing a White House official, had reported that Trump was planning to pull out of the deal.
Another news website, Axios, citing two unnamed sources described as having direct knowledge of the move, reported that Trump has made the decision to quit the agreement.
Axios said that the White House has yet to settle on a means for pulling out, either through a formal process of leaving the agreement or cancelling the United Nations climate treaty on which the Paris deal is based.
Trump vowed during his 2016 presidential campaign to cancel the agreement.
During in Friday’s summits in Europe, international leaders and even Pope Francis urged Trump not to renege on the Paris accord, which aims to limit climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions.
