The Anambra government targets two million children for integrated measles campaign in November, its Commissioner for Health, Dr Lawrence Ikeako, said in Awka on Thursday.
Ikeako told newsmen that the campaign followed the recent measles outbreak in the state in spite of its efforts to curb the menace in 2008 and 2011.
“Children under five years are mostly affected. Based on this, there is need for a follow up campaign to reduce to the barest minimum, deaths resulting from measles outbreak.
“The overall goal is to reduce childhood mortality and morbidity due to measles and sustain the interruption of wild polio transmission among children under five years of age,” he said.
Ikeako said the campaign scheduled to hold from Nov.2 to Nov. 6 would also be used to scale up delivery of routine immunisation antigens and other child survival interventions.
According to him, children between nine months and five years will receive measles vaccines while children between zero and 59 months will be vaccinated with oral polio vaccines.
Ikeako advised parents and caregivers to make their children available for the vaccines in all the primary health centres and designated posts.
