LAGOS – Sunday Nwamuda, the Head Coach of Sunny Clay Boxing Promotion, has attributed the dearth of competition in the country to poor response to appeals for sponsorship.
Nwamuda told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos that no competition had been organised by the body for upcoming boxers in 2014.
The organiser of Greater Tomorrow Boxing Competition explained that the last time the body held competition was in September 2013.
He said that the competition was targeted at identifying young male and female boxers in the state.
“We usually have two competitions in the year, but since the beginning of this year, not even one has been organised because of the poor response from the individuals and corporate bodies we approached. [eap_ad_1] “This situation is a big challenge because such competition is a major forum to evaluate our progress, after subjecting the young boxers to training,’’ he said.
The coach said he visited primary and secondary schools in Lagos to introduce the sport and coach interested pupils with the permission of the school authorities.
“As a grass-roots coach, I go round to introduce the sport to students during their sporting activities with permission from the school management.
“The response has been very encouraging because, sometimes, the schools even provide them with gloves which they use for training, and the pupils are happy to engage in sports.
“The objective is to ensure that upcoming boxers are thoroughly educated on the ethics of boxing so that their development can be in conformity with the basics,’’ he said.
Nwamuda, however, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, corporate bodies and ex-boxers in the country and those based abroad to help in developing grass-roots boxing through sponsorships. (NAN)
