JOS – Sen. Victor Lar, representing Plateau South at the National Assembly, on Friday in Jos, declared his intention to contest in the Plateau governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lar made his intention known at the state headquarters of the party.
He said that if elected, his top priority would be to restore permanent peace to the state.
The governorship aspirant, who was received by the PDP Vice Chairman, Central Zone, Mr Yusuf Tokkit, urged the party to create a level playing ground for all aspirants.
He added that though Nigeria’s constitution and that of the PDP did not create room for zoning, there was an unwritten law of equity that established it in the consciousness of the people of Plateau.
Lar said other zones had produced governors of the state in the past and that it was now the turn of his zone to produce the next governor, hence his aspiration.
The senator said he was the most suitable choice from the zone for that position, having been in politics for over 30 years.
He said that his 30 years experience equipped him with the knowledge of “politics and politricks’’ of Nigeria.
“The party can win the elections in 2015 only if it presents a credible candidate who can govern the state well,’’ he said. [eap_ad_1] He explained that failure to produce credible candidates like himself would expose the party to the risk of losing the governor’s seat to an opposition party.
On his part, the party’s Vice Chairman pledged that the leadership of the party in the state would create a level playing ground for all its aspirants in the election.
He said “Lar has the right qualifications to be a governor of the state, having served the state in various capacities.
“For the people of the southern zone to continue to elect you to represent them at the National Assembly, both as House of Representative member and Senator, it means you are credible.’’
Tokkit said Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau had done well in the provision of dividends of democracy to the people and that the party would take its time in choosing his successor.
He said the party would seek divine intervention to ensure that the right person takes over from Jang. (NAN)
