ONITSHA – The Onitsha Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday lauded the National Assembly for supporting President Goodluck Jonathan’s demand for improved security funding to tackle insurgency in the country.
The President of the Chamber, Dr Tim Anosike, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha, Anambra, that the lawmakers did well in considering the over-riding interest of the country’s unity and oneness.
Anosike noted that at this critical period political parties and politicians must come together to fight terrorism which had become the common enemy of our existence and peace.
“Actually, I have commended the Federal Government, the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan in the way he has been handling the issue of insurgency in the country.
“I am aware too of the support the Reps and the Senate gave him for that total war.
“That is a right step in the right direction because by the time you will think these things (insurgency) are playing, by the time you know it, it would be late; so, I think it is timely. The chamber boss, however, appealed to every Nigerian to give President Jonathan the needed support to deal with the security situation.
“If you have no idea to proffer as solution, you can pray for the peace of the country, divine wisdom for Mr President and victory for our officers and men of the armed forces battling the insurgents,’’ he said.
The National Assembly had approved Jonathan’s request to secure $1 billion (about N160 billion) loan to enable the Federal Government to upgrade military equipment in its renewed zeal to stamp out insurgency.
NAN reports that insurgency, which predominantly takes place in the North-East region, had led to disruption of businesses and other activities in the region. (NAN)
